Soso & DJ Kutdown - "All They Found was Water at the Bottom of the Sea"
| Kod: | My new instrumental collaboration with DJ Kutdown is titled "All They Found was Water at the Bottom of the Sea" and is slated for release on Hue Records, Japan. I thought a bit of background information on the album might be interesting to whoever reads these things...
My working relationship with DJ Kutdown dates back to the Heater in My Truck EP, when I approached him to provide album cuts. I was thoroughly impressed with the results and although we live in different cities, we continued to work together periodically, building a friendship along the way. We had
kicked around the idea of producing an album together and after a great deal of internet scheming, plans for a collaborative instrumental project began to take shape. In an effort to push our production in new directions and create some new work, we decided to attempt to blend our very different but complementary production styles -- I would provide the melody arrangements and Kutdown would provide the drum sequences.
Armed with a bunch of sample records, clean socks and beer money, I travelled to Winnipeg to spend some time at Kutdown's home studio. During the day I would pick through records, chopping samples and arranging melody bits along the way. In the evenings, we would review the day's work and Kut would start working with the drums. Over the course of about a week we produced a dozen or so beats and I returned home with the foundations of a seven track album. I really enjoyed the opportunity to concentrate on the act of making music without all the distractions of my regular life. I returned home to wrestle with these distractions and due to circustance and tragic personal flaws the album would sit in limbo for some time.
Every so often Kutdown and I would dig up those old songs and listen with pride and bewilderment. It was difficult to to believe we had neglected
this little jem for such a long time. In 2008 we re-committed to completing the record and I returned once again to Winnipeg. Three years had past.
"All They Found was Water at the Bottom of the Sea" was created in the spirit of collaboration and friendship and painted with the colours of a more optimistic time. The album retains the character that defined much of our earlier work and reflects our ongoing appreciation for beautiful samples and drums that smack.
I am very pleased with the results.

"All They Found was Water at the Bottom of the Sea" is a line from one of my favourite JD Walker songs. For me, this single line is charged with meaning and I'm super happy he has granted permission to use it!
